Part 4: Network Infrastructure Installation
The most complex element of this systems upgrade was the networking. This was true both from the standpoint of understanding the three ad-hoc networks compiled of consumer-grade equipment and in recognizing the multiple points of failure that existed throughout. Understanding the opportunity to build the new architectural system alongside the current and future networking needs of the venue was imperative to the successful installation of this system, and to ensuring the most strategic use of the money spent on the upgrade. Ultimately, the upgrade provided a path to install communication pathways throughout the venue, resulting in flexibility that modern productions require, while ensuring the ability to more easily utilize rented production equipment and upgrade existing equipment in the future.
The spec for this phase of the upgrade included new network interface racks, patch panels, and managed network switches in the following locations throughout the facility:
Followspot Booth | FOH Mix Position | Trap Room | Lighting Control Office USL | Amp Room USL | Dimmer Room USR
Mutimode fiber was spec'd to connect the primary console location in the followspot booth with the dimmer room USR and the secondary console location in the lighting office USL. Added CAT5e dry lines were spec'd to distribute from a central hub rack in the Trap Room to the remaining rack locations. Additionally, dry lines were spec'd to be installed in regularly needed spaces based on previous usage trends: DSL and DSR on the stage level and jump levels, as well as in the USR corner of the stage level.
