The Mivos Quartet, one of the most sought-after string quartets in the international new music scene, will be in residence at EMPAC to develop and perform a new work by American composer Eric Wubbels. Titled being time, the piece is an audio variation on the psychological experience of time. Extending nearly an hour, it moves from sections of extreme slowness and static sustains to high-energy plateaus of dense, saturated sound textures. In the final sequence, quadraphonic electronic sound pushes the performance into an altogether new dimension, creating vivid psychoacoustic illusions by using extremely high sine waves.

Technical Project Notes:

In coordination with Electronics Programmer, Bryan Jacobs, Composer Eric Wubbles, and EMPAC Music Curator Argeo Ascani, we decided to incorporate an array of clear G-40 light bulbs in ceramic sockets wired to white cords suspended below the tension grid of the venue. ARTnet control of the array was provided to the artists through a PATHPORT C-series node converting selected dimmers of the facilities sACN networked ETC Sensor SineWave dimming system to ArtNET control for the artists. Supplimental control of the Source Four 10° lighting xtures illuminating both the musicians and their music stands was le under control of the venue’s ETC ION Lighting console located on the sACN network. e artist was then able to control the light bulbs through algorithms in Max, at times manipulating the intensity of the light bulbs closest to the musicians based on audio inputs from the Mivos Quartet’s musicians directly.
